ABOUT ME

Rene van Pannevis.png

I was born in The Netherlands in a hippie neighbourhood where life was a circus.

Before I started Film Study at Utrecht University I worked at a TV-recycle

factory where people lost body parts, in garbage and at a coffee factory

where I developed my taste for coffee.

In 2007, I received my BA in Film Study. One of the highlights was a

masterclass of oscar nominee Hani Abu Assad. Same year I enrolled

in film directing program at prestige NYU Tisch School of the Arts

under the artistic guidance of the brilliant and always swearing

Oliver Stone. His teaching was unforgettable. Among the many

other brilliant teachers were Todd Solondz, Shekhar Kupar,

Bobby Bukowski, Matt Chesse and Roger Spottiswood who

taught me great lessons in film making.

In my first year my short GODVERDOMME! premiered at Oscar qualified festival Palm Springs. In 2010, I started a fulltime job at acclaimed agency Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam as editor and filmmaker. Directed and edited TVC’s including award winning digital content. In May 2013, I graduated at Tisch and obtained my M.F.A in film directing after completing my thesis film Junkie XL that opened at Hamburg film festival. Soon after I went to film hub London to fulfil my passion in making films.

In 2015, Film London funded my short JACKED starring Thomas Turgoose (This Is England) and Charley Palmer Rothwell (Legend). The BIFA award winning short had its national premiere at BFI London Film Festival and International premiere at the Berlinale 2016. With JACKED, my first film out of NYU Tisch, I brought my experiences growing up on the streets of Rotterdam to the gritty, urban landscape of British crime cinema.

In 2017, my feature script LOOTED was commissioned by Film London Microwave scheme. A year later it went into production with Charley Palmer Rothwell (Rob), Thomas Turgoose (Leo), Tom Fisher (Oswald) and Morgane Polanski (Kasia) as the main cast.

Looted, (BBC/BFI/Film London) won the prestigious International Critics Award at Tallinn at 2019 and has sold for UK and European distribution. It was longlisted at for seven BIFA awards including Best Director and Best Screenplay, and was nominated for the Discovery Award 2020.

Besides writing original film scripts I very much enjoy the duties of a film jury. In 2020 I was the jury for FIRST FEATURE competition at Tallinn film festival and the year after a jury voter for the BIFA international competition.
